Marina Bay

Marina Bay: Singapore’s crypto event district

Every October, tens of thousands of people come to Marina Bay Sands for TOKEN2049. None of them can buy crypto at a counter here, but plenty of them get targeted by scams. This is the guide we would give a first-time attendee.

Marina Bay in event season

For most of the year, Marina Bay is bankers walking from Downtown MRT to the Marina Bay Financial Centre towers, tourists photographing the Merlion and joggers on the loop around the bay. For one week each October it turns into the busiest crypto venue in Asia. Conference badges appear on the Helix Bridge, side events fill every rooftop from Bayfront to Raffles Place, and the queue for the lifts at Marina Bay Sands is mostly people talking about stablecoins.

That week is useful to know about whether or not you attend. It is when new products get announced, when Singapore firms hire, and when scammers are busiest. But it changes nothing about how you buy crypto here. There is still no ATM, no booth that sells coins to the public, and no walk-in counter in the district. Marina Bay is where the industry talks; your account still lives on your phone.

TOKEN2049 at Marina Bay Sands

TOKEN2049 is a commercial crypto conference that runs editions in Singapore and Dubai. The Singapore edition takes over all five floors of the convention venue at Marina Bay Sands. The 2026 conference ran on 7 and 8 October, and the wider TOKEN2049 Week of side events from 5 to 11 October, closing with the AFTER2049 party at the SkyPark on 9 October. The organisers said about 25,000 people from around 160 countries were expected and later announced that the event had sold out. They also counted more than 1,000 side events across the city during the week.

The next edition is listed for 6 and 7 October 2027. Tickets are sold only through the organiser’s own checkout pages, by card or in crypto, and are non-refundable. Resold tickets on social media and “discount” codes from strangers are among the oldest scams of the season.

A conference badge gets you into talks and the exhibition floor. It does not make anyone you meet there a regulated business.

The local crypto calendar

TOKEN2049 is the big one, but it is not the only reason crypto people gather around the bay. Here is what we could verify for the district and the events people often confuse with it.

EventWhenWhereGood to know
TOKEN2049 SingaporeEarly October (2027: 6–7 Oct)Marina Bay SandsPaid tickets; side events all week across the city
Bitcoin Walk SGRegular weekday evenings (walks announced for Jan and Feb 2026)Meets at MBFC, walks via Gardens by the BayFree, community-run, explicitly not a pitch event
Singapore FinTech Festival18–20 Nov 2026Singapore EXPO (not Marina Bay)Organised with MAS; invite-only Insights2040 on 16–17 Nov at Sands Expo

The Bitcoin Walk SG posts we found describe an hour-long evening walk from Marina Bay Financial Centre around Gardens by the Bay, open to all levels and without registration. It is a nice contrast to the conference: no booths, no tokens to promote, just people who like Bitcoin talking about it. Dates are announced by the organisers on Nostr, so check there rather than relying on this page.

The financial district behind the events

The conferences are here because the companies are. According to the MAS Financial Institutions Directory, six of the 38 firms licensed for digital payment token services give a Marina Bay address. OKX SG is registered at 12 Marina Boulevard in Marina Bay Financial Centre, and Moomoo Financial Singapore in MBFC Tower 2. Circle’s Singapore entity is at One Marina Boulevard, Gemini’s at Marina One East Tower, and Cumberland and XREX are in the Asia Square towers. Gemini received its full Major Payment Institution licence on 8 September 2026.

The timing of policy news follows the same rhythm. Autumn in Singapore tends to bring licence announcements and consultations alongside the conferences. In 2026, MAS published draft amendments to the Payment Services Act for its stablecoin framework on 1 September, and the consultation closed on 16 October, a week after TOKEN2049. Those rules are not yet law. If you hear on a panel that something is “now allowed in Singapore”, check the MAS website rather than the slide deck. Our legal guide tracks what is in force.

The regulator is a short walk away at 10 Shenton Way, and most of the remaining licensed firms are a few streets further into the CBD, which our Central & CBD guide covers. None of these offices takes walk-in customers. If you want to check that a company you met at a booth is really licensed, search its legal name in the directory or in our list of MAS-licensed exchanges. A brand name on a banner is not enough: plenty of exhibitors are licensed elsewhere or not at all.

Event-season scams: what to watch for

Big events concentrate people who hold crypto, carry phones with wallets on them and are used to scanning QR codes all day. Scammers know that. In January 2024 the Singapore Police Force and the Cyber Security Agency issued a joint advisory on crypto drainers, describing fake airdrops promoted through social media and hijacked accounts that lead to look-alike sites asking you to connect your wallet. One signature can hand over permission to move your tokens.

Safe habits for event week

  • Carry a separate “event wallet” with only small amounts if you plan to claim POAPs or try demos.
  • Type URLs yourself or use bookmarks; do not follow links from event chat groups.
  • Read what a wallet signature actually approves before tapping confirm.
  • Keep your main holdings on a hardware wallet or a licensed exchange account you set up at home.

Red flags on and off the floor

  • QR codes on stickers, flyers or lanyards promising free tokens or “early access”.
  • A friendly stranger who offers to help you “fix” or “sync” your wallet.
  • “Support staff” DMing you on Telegram after you post in an event group.
  • Side-event tickets, VIP passes or OTC deals offered at far below market.

Lost funds to a drainer?

Move whatever is left to a new wallet straight away, revoke token approvals, then report the case to the police and through ScamShield. Our crypto scams guide and wallet guide explain how.

Visiting for an event and want to buy?

Many TOKEN2049 attendees fly in for a week. If you want to buy crypto while you are in Singapore, the simplest route is usually the account you already have at home, since Singapore has no counters or machines to use instead. Singapore-licensed apps are built around Singpass and local bank rails such as PayNow, and their eligibility rules for non-residents vary, so check before you try. Our Changi guide covers KYC as a foreigner, passports and proof of address in more detail.

Whatever you use, check the price in Singapore dollars before agreeing to any deal, and be very sceptical of anyone offering to sell you USDT for cash in a hotel lobby. Running that as a business without a MAS licence is an offence, and the money can be linked to scams.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next TOKEN2049 Singapore?

The organisers list the next edition for 6 and 7 October 2027 at Marina Bay Sands. The 2026 edition ran on 7 and 8 October 2026, with the wider TOKEN2049 Week from 5 to 11 October. Always confirm dates on token2049.com before booking travel.

Can I buy crypto at TOKEN2049?

Not in the way you might hope. Exhibitors show products, but licensed Singapore firms do not sell crypto to the public at booths, and you should not hand over money or scan payment codes for anyone on the show floor. Buy through an app you set up yourself before the event.

Is there a Bitcoin ATM at Marina Bay Sands?

No. There are no public crypto ATMs anywhere in Singapore. They were switched off in January 2022 after MAS guidelines barred marketing through physical machines, and none has returned as far as we can find.

Is the Singapore FinTech Festival held at Marina Bay?

The main festival is not. The 2026 festival runs from 18 to 20 November at Singapore EXPO near Changi. Its invite-only Insights2040 annual meetings, on 16 and 17 November, are at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Marina Bay.

Someone at a side event offered me free tokens if I connect my wallet. Is it safe?

Treat it as a likely drainer. Free tokens that need you to connect a wallet and sign a transaction are the most common way wallets are emptied. If you want to try a real airdrop, use a fresh wallet with nothing valuable in it, and only through the project’s official site.

Is TOKEN2049 endorsed by MAS?

No. TOKEN2049 is a commercial conference run by a private organiser. Speaking or exhibiting there says nothing about a company’s licence status. The financial event MAS is involved in organising is the Singapore FinTech Festival in November.

Are Bitcoin Walk SG meetups free?

The walks we found announced for early 2026 were free and needed no registration. They are community-run, so check the organisers’ own posts for the next date and meeting point.
