Who this guide is for
Step out of Novena MRT and the neighbourhood’s character is obvious within a few hundred metres. Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Neuroscience Institute are a short walk away. Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital anchors the private side, with specialist suites in Novena Medical Centre, Novena Specialist Centre and Royal Square. NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine runs its clinical campus from a tower beside TTSH. MOH’s HealthCity Novena master plan will add more over the coming decade.
That means a lot of the people who work here are doctors, nurses, allied health staff, researchers and the lawyers, bankers and consultants in the offices above Novena Square and Velocity. Many earn above the national median. Plenty work rosters that make it hard to sit in front of a trading screen at a fixed time.
This page is not about where to buy crypto in Novena. There is nowhere to buy it in person, here or anywhere else in Singapore. It is about the questions that come up when a professional with real savings starts thinking about crypto: whether to opt in as an accredited investor, whether a bank is safer than an exchange, when an OTC desk is worth it, and what happens to the coins if you can no longer manage them.
Accredited investor status, explained
Singapore’s Securities and Futures Act defines an accredited investor (AI). For an individual, you need to meet at least one financial test, and then you must actively opt in with each institution that wants to treat you as one.
- Income
- At least S$300,000 (or the foreign-currency equivalent) in the preceding 12 months
- Net personal assets
- More than S$2 million, with your primary residence counted at no more than S$1 million of that
- Net financial assets
- More than S$1 million, net of related liabilities (deposits, investments and similar, not property)
- Opt-in
- Required since the 2018 amendments took full effect; you can withdraw consent in writing
A senior consultant may clear the income test easily. A younger doctor with a large mortgage may clear none, and the residence cap stops property alone from carrying you over the S$2 million line.
What opting in actually changes is the part most people skip. AIs are presumed to be able to look after themselves, so they get fewer of the protections that retail customers get. Independent Reserve’s own page says it plainly: accredited investors are subject to a lower level of regulatory protection. Products offered to AIs can be riskier and less transparent, and some sit outside MAS supervision altogether.
Opting in is not an upgrade
AI status unlocks access, not safety. Before you sign the declaration, ask the institution exactly which product you want needs AI status, and which retail protections you give up to get it. If the answer is “nothing you need”, stay a retail customer.
Four routes for higher earners
For someone with S$5,000 to spend, the route is simple: a MAS-licensed exchange, a PayNow deposit and a small order. As amounts and income rise, more options appear. Here is how they compare.
| Route | Who can use it | What you get | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail account on a licensed exchange | Any adult resident who passes KYC and the risk check | Statutory trust over your coins, free PayNow or FAST on most platforms | Instant-buy spreads; no leverage or lending |
| DBS digibank crypto | Accredited investors in DBS Treasures and private banking | Orders in the digibank app on DBS Digital Exchange, debited from your DBS account | Short coin list (BTC, BCH, ETH, XRP at launch) |
| Exchange AI services | Opted-in AIs, e.g. at Independent Reserve | Higher limits, a relationship manager, yield and structured strategies | Some products come from unregulated affiliates |
| OTC desk | Usually from about S$50,000 a trade | One firm quote, no order-book slippage, settled by bank transfer | Compare the quote to the live book |
DBS. In September 2022 DBS opened self-directed crypto trading in the digibank app to accredited investors in its DBS Treasures segment, having previously limited it to private bank, Treasures Private Client and institutional clients. At launch the coins were Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether and XRP, with a US$500 minimum, and press reports put the Treasures entry point at S$350,000 of investable assets. We could not confirm the current coin list or minimums on a public DBS page, so ask your relationship manager. The attraction is obvious: your coins sit with Singapore’s largest bank group, and funding is a debit from your own account. The trade-off is a narrow menu and very little flexibility to move coins in and out.
Independent Reserve. Independent Reserve SG holds a MAS Major Payment Institution licence (PS20200517) and runs a dedicated service for AIs. It lists the same three individual tests and says AI clients get higher limits, priority access to structured products, accumulators and covered-call strategies, a relationship manager and access to block liquidity. Read the fine print: it states that those sophisticated products are provided by ReserveX Pte Ltd, which is not regulated by MAS. Leverage is reserved for corporate AIs. Its AI status is reviewed every 12 months. Our Independent Reserve review covers its ordinary retail service too.
Everyone else. Most professionals, AIs included, do not need any of this. A retail account on a licensed platform with free PayNow deposits is cheap and keeps the strongest protections. The licensed names are in our list of MAS-licensed exchanges, and the home page compares them side by side at our exchange table.
When an OTC desk makes sense
A specialist moving a bonus or the proceeds of a property sale into Bitcoin can easily be looking at a six-figure order. Pushing that through an exchange order book in one go can move the price against you. An over-the-counter desk gives you a single firm quote instead.
Independent Reserve’s Singapore desk handles orders from about 50,000 up into the tens of millions, settles within hours and takes PayNow and FAST among other rails. StraitsX runs a stablecoin desk from about US$100,000. None of the licensed desks we checked advertises cash settlement. Money moves by bank transfer, from an account in your own name. The calculator below compares a desk’s quoted spread with an exchange fill, so you can see whether the desk is actually cheaper for your size. Our OTC guide has the full list of desks and minimums.
Exchange order vs OTC quote
Slippage grows with size and falls with liquidity. Ask the desk for a firm quote and compare it to the live order book before you accept.
Licensed custody and where coins sit
For larger holdings, where the coins are kept matters more than the fee you paid to buy them. You have three broad options.
On a licensed platform. Since MAS’s consumer measures, licensed providers must keep retail customers’ tokens separate from their own and hold them on statutory trust, and they may not lend or stake retail customers’ tokens. Independent Reserve, for example, says client fiat is safeguarded with DBS and most crypto sits in cold storage with a qualified custodian. None of this protects you from price falls, and crypto is not covered by deposit insurance.
With a specialist custodian. The MAS directory lists firms such as BitGo, Anchorage Digital, Hex Technologies and Sygnum among its digital payment token licensees. They serve institutions, family offices and very large private clients, with minimums to match.
In your own wallet. A hardware wallet puts you in full control, and it also puts every risk on you: lost seed phrases, phishing, and family members who cannot get in. Our wallet guide explains how to set one up and where to buy it safely.
Keep it simple if you can
A verified account, a free PayNow deposit and a modest first order is still the best start, whatever you earn.
Busy rosters and recurring buys
Night shifts, on-call weeks and clinic lists that overrun do not mix well with trying to time the market. The people we hear from in healthcare are rarely short of money for crypto. They are short of attention.
A recurring buy fixes most of that. You choose an amount and a date, fund the account by PayNow or a standing FAST transfer, and the platform buys at whatever the price is. Coinhako, for example, lists a 0.5% fee on recurring buys, slightly below its standard SGD spot fee. You never chase a spike at 3am after a long shift, and you cannot forget to buy during a busy month.
Two practical points. Turn on notifications so you notice if a payment fails, and review the plan every six months, not every day. Our recurring buy guide has a calculator that shows how fees add up over two or five years.
If something happens to you
People in Novena see more than most how quickly someone can lose the capacity to manage their own affairs. Crypto makes that harder for families, because nobody can phone a bank and ask for the balance of a seed phrase.
- Write down which platforms and wallets you use, in a place your executor will find. Do not include passwords or seed phrases in the same document.
- Make a will that mentions digital assets, and tell your executor where the access instructions are kept.
- Consider a Lasting Power of Attorney through the Office of the Public Guardian, so someone you trust can manage your property and affairs if you lose mental capacity.
- Ask each platform how it handles a deceased customer’s account and what documents it will need.
- If you self-custody, think about how a family member could recover the wallet without being exposed to scammers in the process.
Remember that a CPF nomination covers only your CPF savings, so it does nothing for coins on an exchange. Estate planning involves law and personal circumstances, and a lawyer who handles wills can tell you what fits your situation. Treat this list as the questions to bring, not the answers.

Open area guideFrequently asked questions
Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Novena?
No. We found no public Bitcoin or crypto ATM in Novena, at Novena Square, Velocity, Square 2 or anywhere around the hospitals. Singapore’s machines were switched off in January 2022 after MAS guidelines told providers not to promote crypto through physical ATMs, and we found no credible report of any returning as of October 2026. Map pins that still show one are out of date.
Can I walk into a bank branch in Novena and buy Bitcoin?
Not as a counter service. DBS offers crypto trading through the digibank app, but only to accredited investors in its wealth segments, and you place orders yourself in the app. Your relationship manager can explain eligibility, but the branch does not hand you coins over the counter.
Do I have to opt in to be treated as an accredited investor?
Yes. Meeting the income or asset test is not enough on its own. Since the opt-in regime took effect, each financial institution must ask you to consent to being treated as an accredited investor, and you can withdraw that consent in writing. Some firms, Independent Reserve among them, also review your status every year.
I earn over S$300,000 as a specialist. Should I opt in?
Only if you want something that is genuinely restricted to accredited investors. Opting in removes some of the protections retail customers get, and most people can buy and hold Bitcoin perfectly well on an ordinary licensed account. We do not give personal financial advice, so if the decision is material for you, talk to a licensed adviser.
Does my CPF nomination cover my crypto?
No. A CPF nomination only covers your CPF savings. Crypto held on an exchange or in your own wallet is part of your wider estate, so it is dealt with through your will or the intestacy rules, and your family will need to know it exists and where it is held.
Is crypto profit from a side portfolio taxed for doctors and other professionals?
Singapore has no capital gains tax, so long-term investment gains are generally not taxed whatever your day job is. IRAS can treat gains as income if your activity looks like a trading business, judged by factors such as frequency and intention. Our crypto tax guide walks through those badges of trade.
